Abstract: Culture is the most important element in any society. Nowadays, politics is a great cultural driver for any social change since politics and culture are interrelated due to the influence of politics on culture. Nowadays, political factions such as Hamas, Fatah and other Islamic factions have contributed in reshaping the Palestinian culture since politics is a genuine part of the Palestinian culture. In other words, any event happening between the two major political factions affects the mentality and identity of the Palestinians. This study aims at assessing the influence of national and Islamic factions on the formation of the Palestinian identity amongst the students of the Palestinian universities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The sample of the study comprises the students of 9 universities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip including the Arab American University, Al-Quds University, Al-Quds Open University, Palestine Technical University, Hebron University, Birzeit University, Al-Azhar University, Islamic University of Gaza and Al-Aqsa University in addition to a group of Palestinian elite from the national Islamic factions in the West Bank and Gaza. Not all universities are included because of special and time limitations. The main hypothesis of this study is that the impact of the national and Islamic factions on the formation of the Palestinian identity in the West Bank and Gaza Strip is positive. The researcher employs the descriptive and analytical approach a long with two main tools including a questionnaire and interviews in order to achieve the main goals of the study. This study questions the nature of the influence of the national and Islamic factions on the formation of the Palestinian identity in the Palestinian universities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. vii The researcher has found that the age of university students contributes in the assessment of the influence national and Islamic factions on the formation of the Palestinian identity. Also, it is found that the political division after Oslo accord in 1993 has affected the national identity negatively because it shattered it. Finally, it is recommended to pay attention to the Palestinian identity to raise the awareness of the young. In addition, educational methods of political movements should be reviewed in support of the Palestinian identity.
